September Cheese of the Month: Organic Yorkshire Blue

To celebrate Organic September, a month-long campaign to raise awareness of Organic products, producers and farmers across the UK, our Cheese of the Month is our newest addition to the Shepherds Purse family, Organic Yorkshire Blue.

Creamy, soft and mild, like our original Yorkshire Blue Cheese, our organic version, launched earlier this year, has grassy, herbaceous notes, which balance beautifully with the blue, umami flavours.

An ideal introduction to blue cheese, our team hand-make and mature it over a minimum of eight weeks here on the farm, turning regularly to achieve the blue veining and smooth, even texture. With age, the flavour deepens and becomes more complex, whilst retaining its mellow creaminess throughout.

...so the journey to Organic Yorkshire Blue seems like a great fit! It came out of a long standing friendship with the Tweddle family, owners of Acorn Organic Dairy just up the road from us.   Alongside a shared ethos towards farming, sustainability and health, we'd always looked for ways to collaborate and innovate over the years, and in early 2023, the opportunity arose and we began trials using their organic milk.

 

Fast forward to Spring 2024, and with the cheese perfected, it was time to launch the first (of hopefully many) organic cheeses into our range.  

2024 Great Taste Awards judges:

"A pleasing creamy texture that melts on the tongue. We enjoyed the rich creaminess and the streaks of blue through the outer layers of the curd."

Awards have since followed over the last few months and this summer saw Organic Yorkshire Blue awarded the Supreme Champion Cheese, Best Organic Product in Show and Best Yorkshire Product in Show at the 2024 Great Yorkshire Show along with a prestigious One Star at the Great Taste Awards too!
