March Cheese of the Month: Organic Yorkshire Blue

This month marks a year since the launch of our Organic Yorkshire Blue

This month marks a year since the launch of our Organic Yorkshire Blue, our very first cheese made using 100% organic milk here at Shepherds Purse.

Like our original Yorkshire Blue, our organic version is deliciously creamy, soft and mild, but using organic milk adds fresh, grassy and herbaceous notes into the mix, thanks to the meadowy sweetness of the milk, which balance beautifully with the umami blue flavours.

Created in partnership with long standing family friends the Tweddle family at Acorn Organic Dairy, we began trials using their milk back in 2023 and our team of artisan cheesemakers here on the farm set to work developing the perfect make.

Organic milk adds fresh, grassy and herbaceous notes into the mix

Left to mature over a minimum of eight weeks under their watchful eyes, each cheese is carefully turned regularly to achieve the blue veining and smooth, even texture throughout. With age, the flavour is allowed to deepen and develop, becoming complex whilst still retaining its mellowness throughout. 

Fast forward to Spring 2024, and with the cheese perfected, it was time to launch the first (of hopefully many) organic cheeses into our range. We often say our blues are an ideal introduction to blue cheese, thanks to their mild, creamy flavours and the popularity of our Organic Yorkshire Blue since its launch has definitely confirmed that! 

Over the last 12 months this special cheese has picked up some very prestigious industry awards including  Supreme Champion Cheese, Best Organic Product and Best Yorkshire Product at the 2024 Great Yorkshire Show along with a coveted One Star at the Great Taste Awards too!
